Snow Removal

The Streets Department is responsible for plowing and treating City streets in the winter.  If you are a property owner, you are responsible for clearing the sidewalks and curb ramps on your property within 24 hours the snowfall/ice ends. If walks are not cleared and the City receives a complaint, the City will clear the sidewalk and bill the property owner.  Learn more about snow removal

Weeds / Grass

The Streets Department and the Rental Housing Department inspect tall grass and weed complaints, depending on the type of property. If you are a property owner, you are responsible for mowing and trimming grass and weeds on your property. The maximum height allowed is 10 inches. Weeds tend to grow faster than grass, but the majority of the grass and weeds in lawn areas should not exceed 10 inches (excludes garden plants and ornamental grasses). Planting in Right of Way

The area between the sidewalk and the street is reserved for utilities. A permit is required before planting trees in this area.  Learn more about trees in the right of way

Installing a Mailbox

Place your mailbox to meet the following standards:

  • The bottom of the mailbox should be 36 inches to 42 inches above the roadway surface.
  • The mailbox door (the side facing the road) should be set 6 inches from the back of the curb.
  • The address should be visible on both sides of the box.
  • View mailbox placement

Storage of Special Vehicles and Watercraft

City parking ordinance allows storage and parking of vehicles in driveways that are under one ton load capacity with no length or height restrictions. No parking is allowed on unpaved surfaces.

Nuisances

Report an Issue

The City receives nuisance reports year round and inspects nuisances on a complaint basis as staff is available. Report an issue at 319.248.1740 or www.coralville.org/letusknow.

Violations & Fees

If the City inspects the property and a violation exists such as a snow-covered sidewalk or tall grass, the following occurs:

 First Violation

  • The City posts a notification on the property with a deadline to correct the violation. In the event of a registered rental property or vacant lot, the City also attempts to notify the property owner directly.
  • The City re-inspects the property.
  • If a violation remains, the City hires a contractor to mow, trim, shovel, etc. at the property owner’s expense.
  • The property owner is responsible for the cost to complete the work, plus a $50 administrative fee.

 Subsequent Violations (during the season/year)

  • The City immediately hires a contractor to mow, trim, shovel, etc. at the property owner’s expense.
  • The property owner is responsible for the cost to complete the work, plus a $50 administrative fee.

The nuisance costs and administrative fees are assessed against the property owner for collection in the same manner as a property tax.
