About Flood Insurance

National Flood Insurance Program

Coralville participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which is managed by FEMA and makes federally-backed flood insurance available in communities that adopt and enforce floodplain management ordinances to reduce future flood damage.

Do I have flood insurance?
Flood losses are not typically covered under renter and homeowner insurance policies. Flood insurance, which can be purchased through an insurance agent, is a separate policy and is available whether the building is in or out of an identified flood-prone area.

How long does it take to get flood insurance?
Typically, there is a 30-day waiting period before flood insurance goes into effect.

Discounted Flood Insurance Premiums

Coralville is rated a Class 7 status in the National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) Community Rating System. Through this program, policyholders can receive discounted flood insurance premium rates to reward community efforts such as local mitigation, floodplain management, and outreach.

With Class 7 status, National Flood Insurance Program policies for Coralville properties issued or renewed after May 1, 2016 receive a 15% discount on premiums to reflect the reduced flood risk. Coralville properties not in flood hazard zones are offered a 5% discount.
